£50k per week? if anywhere near to the truth it’s ridiculous…
If there’s a story in the papers this morning which better sums up some of the issues in English football, then please feel free to point it out.
According to The Mail, Raheem Sterling and his agents are determined squeeze £50,000/week out of Liverpool for the winger’s new contract.
Now beware, because anytime a national paper starts talking about contracts, they have a tendency to mess about with the numbers – but let’s assume they’ve got that figure just about right, what is his agent playing at? I know that Sterling is talented, and that he’s made a real difference to Liverpool’s width this season, but come on – we can’t have a situation where players with 20 senior appearances feel entitled to enormous bank-breaking contracts. That’s absurd.
This is a balance between what he’s worth, and what it would be sensible to give him – and his contract runs until 2015, so there’s no time pressure on Liverpool here. Too much money, too soon spoils players and makes them believe that they’ve made it – whereas Sterling needs to be encouraged to keep working and developing. From Liverpool’s perspective, yes, there’s obviously a need to reward him for his progress so far, but even so – that doesn’t need to be anything like £50,000.
